In a society that has become increasingly litigious, it has become increasingly important for everyone to consider adding on what is known as a "personal umbrella" to your insurance coverage. This liability insurance covers you in many situations if you are held responsible for bodily injury, property damage, or personal injury to yourself.
While "umbrella" may seem a strange name for an insurance policy, it's actually fairly descriptive of the intent. This policy provides coverage that creates an "umbrella" of liability protection over the top of all of your other property and liability policies, which are considered "primary" policies. This coverage kicks in after primary insurance is exhausted. In addition, it can provide you with coverage in areas you may not have any underlying insurance (for example if you were to rent a moped or boat).
