Stay Compliant in 2017: New Version of Form I-9 Released
it’s the start of a brand new year and with it comes a new Form I-9. If one of your new year’s resolutions for 2017 was to make sure your business is compliant with all the Federal and State regulations you’ll want to read this.
The new Form I-9 is well, a lot like the old one but there are a few key differences. Here is what you should know:
- The new I-9 was published on November 14th, 2016 and must be used exclusively by January 22nd, 2017
- Has a dedicated field for adding additional information so the preparer no longer needs to put notes in the margins
- The electronic version has drop down menus, calendars for selecting dates, click-able on screen instructions for each field and the option to clear the entire form and begin again
- Regardless of whether you choose to complete the form on the computer using the electronic version, or print a hard copy, all forms must be signed by hand and a hard copy retained
As is always the case when a new form is released; employers do not need to go back and re-do all the forms currently on file. The new form is meant to be used going forward and for any new employees and rehires made after three years of the original execution of the form.
