Historic Keene, New Hampshire:
Keene is in nestled in the Southwestern corner of the State in the beautiful Connecticut River Valley. Settled by Nathan Blake and William Smeed in 1737, the city of Keene was originally known as Upper Ashuelot. Upper Ashuelot was abandoned (1746-50) due to hostile Indians and later resettled and named for Sir Benjamin Keene (1697-1757), English minister to Spain. It was incorporated as a town in 1753, and chartered as a city in 1874. Keene remains the only city in Cheshire County with a population of 25,000. Keene is a vibrant New England Community with much to do from events at Keene State College to miles of woodland trails and a vibrant downtown.
