Historic Charlestown, New Hampshire:

The town of Charlestown lies in the western part of Sullivan County, along Route 12. The first grant of the town was made by Massachusetts December 31, 1735. The area, known as Number 4, was first settled by David, Samuel, and Stephen Farnsworth in 1710. However, the town developed slowly due to Native-American unrest and the imminent war between England and France. At that point, residents voted to finish the Fort at No. 4, which remains open today as a historical museum. The town was chartered by the state of New Hampshire on July 2, 1753. The name Charlestown was selected in honor of Commodore Sir Charles Knowles of the English Navy. Knowles had presented Captain Phineas Stevens an elegant sword as tribute to Steven's bravery in defending the Fort at No. 4 against an overwhelming Native-American attack on April 4, 1747.
